A New Name for Station Street Park: Friendship Square – Hiiye'yutul'

We are excited to announce the new name for Station Street Park: Friendship Square – Hiiye'yutul'!

Thank you to the 268 community members who took the time to vote and share their voice in this meaningful process. On Monday, April 28th, Council received a report from staff outlining the final results of the public naming poll. The votes were as follows:

  • Friendship Square – Hiiye'yutul': 46%

  • Salish Spirit Place – Salish Suli: 23%

  • Gathering Place – Sq'uq'iptul: 31%

Hiiye'yutul' means 'be friendly with everyone' in Hul'q'umi'num'. You can hear how to say the name in Hul'q'umi'num' by clicking here. Currently, there is no equivalent word for 'square' in Hul'q'umi'num' but if a word becomes available, we will update the name to include it at that time.

A big huy tseep q'u (thank you) to everyone who participated! This new name invites everyone to connect, gather, and share in this space in friendship.
